In the exhibition ‘120598’, Elina Simbolon uses sculptural object and performative photography to investigate the socio-political trauma experienced by the ethnic Chinese community in Indonesia.

She has arranged her art works in the cool, encouraging-like coziness of the Alternating Current ArtSpace Gallery, 248 High St, Windsor VIC 3181.

Elina Simbolon is a Melbourne based artist originally from West Java, Indonesia. Her practice employs sculptural objects, digital photography and installation to investigate the socio-political trauma experienced by the ethnic Chinese community in Indonesia. Specifically, her sculptural objects involve transforming everyday materials through techniques such as cutting, fastening, wrapping and heating into metaphorical vessels that suggest pain, loss, anxiety, fear and displacement. She allows herself to work intuitively whereby she becomes deeply entrusted to material’s lead and control.

Elina started her journey in the fine art world as a first-year student at Chisholm Institute, when she had a solo exhibition Unpacked My Suitcase at Libran Dogman Gallery, Melbourne in 2010. She received a Bachelor of Fine Art from Monash University in 2016 where her project entitled Scar of My Motherland exhibited at Highway Gallery and Walker Street Gallery in 2017. She completed a Master of Fine Arts with Distinction at RMIT University in 2019.

The ‘120598’ art exhibition will surprise the gallery visitors with exploration of the trauma of sexual assault experience.
