Top 6 Travel Tips to Enjoy the Perfect Road Trip

The road trip from Perth to Melbourne with my two best friends was one of the most memorable experiences in my life. The eight-day trip, which included nights in the picturesque Streaky Bay, a very hot Southern Cross and beautiful Mount Gambier were just some of the highlights. If you’re ever considering a journey like this (or maybe something a bit shorter) here are six tips that will help you make the most of your time on the road.

Check the car is in good working condition

Before departing for your road trip, you’ll want to be sure your car is in tip top condition. Ideally, take the car to a mechanic a week before and have the car’s fluids and breaks checked, you’ll want to carry a spare tyre too.

Divide the labour among your group

Each person on your trip will have their own skills and abilities. Make sure you divide the tasks such as who will drive, who’s going to help navigate and pick the music and which person picks the places to eat and sleep. This division of labour is important to having a fun and cohesive team for the trip.

Create the perfect music playlist

In the days of smart phones with Spotify and Apple Music, it’s becoming easier to make music playlists. If you’re going to be in the car for a while, I’d suggest having a playlist to enjoy so you and your friends can sing along.

Have a go at carpool karaoke

Television hosts such as James Corden have now made singing together in the car with friends a popular television past time, but this has already been a much-celebrated tradition of many road trips over the years. Don’t be afraid to bust out a few tunes or try a duet with your fellow road trippers.

Check the weather conditions before you depart

The weather conditions can change dramatically and quickly while on your trip, particularly heavy rain can cause storms and flooding, while windy and hot conditions can lead to fires. Be careful and aware of the weather conditions before you jump in the car for a road trip.

Bring food to enjoy along the way

Having snacks such as fresh fruit or chips (if you’re feeling a bit naughty) can be a great way to keep moving on your journey, while refuelling your stomach at the same time. Please note: Some drivers will not like you eating in their car. It’s best to check the ground rules before commencing the trip!

Most importantly, follow the safety rules while driving and enjoy the journey!
