Tantangan

Harapan

Dalam 15 tahun terakhir, Catholic Bishops Conference of Australia (Konferensi Wali Gereja Katolik Australia)  sudah mengakui, menghargai dan bahkan mengagumi kehadiran Ethnic Migrant of the Catholic  di negara ini. Hampir di setiap keuskupan Agung Metropolitan di kota besar seperti Melbourne, sudah dibentuk secara resmi Chaplaincy for the  Ethnic Migrant for the Catholic Church, termasuk KKI.

Keeping Faith is Always a Challenge

The Indonesia Catholic Family (KKI) Melbourne is a chaplaincy, the official Parish of the Archidose of Melbourne, which was founded 27 years ago. The main task is taking care of all pastoral services, sacremental and spirtual for all Indonesian Catholics who are living in Victoria and surrounding areas. As the days pass their members continue to grow, not only those coming from Indonesia but also the birth of the children of KKI citizens who have already become permanent residents or Australian citizens. It is evident from the number of infant baptisims, with a total of 3-4 babies every second Sunday mass at the Church of St. Joseph, Port Melbourne.

Spiritual services for Catholics in Melbourne are clear and orderly, with the Archidose of Melbourne officially recognising the management structure. Within a month, KKI Melbourne held celebrations for Holy Mass four times in four different places: first Sunday in the Church of St. Martin De Porres-Laverton, second Sunday in the Church of St. Joseph-Port Melbourne, the third Sunday in St. Church St. Francis-Melbourne CBD and fourth Sunday at the Church of St. Paschal-Box Hill. In the area of pastoral care, especiall for Young Catholics (OMK), there are a number of other Mass celebrations in each month such as: the first Saturday there is Mass for Young Catholics (MUDIKA) at 12 midday Monastery Hall of St. Francis Church, the second Saturday there is a deepening of faith with the Australian Catholic Indonesian Children (AIKA) in the South Eastern suburbs, the fourth Saturday there was a Mass in the Catholic Charismatic Prayer (PDKKI) in St. Augustine Church-City, and soon there will be a Friday Mass in the first Friday of every month for the Community of the Holy Trinity (KTM) in Camberwell. That is not counting all the other regional Masses and other thematic activities such as the Rosary, Bible Sharing, the commemorative ceremonies of birth and death usually held in the homes of the Catholics themselves.

Services

In relation to the procedure of religious worship, one of the unique qualities of the Catholic Church is that it is Apostolic, Catholic and Universal. In the sense that the celebration of Mass itself, everything has an ordered sequence for celebration, sacred prayers for each day, week month and year, are always the same for every Catholic Church throughout the world. We have what is called MISSAL, the Universe of Catholic Church Kalderium (Calendar). It is because of that anyone that comes to Mass in the local church especially KKI Church Melbourne, does not have any problems except in terms of language (English) for those who come to the local church for the first time.

Due to it being universal, citizens of the local Catholic Church in Melbourne are open to overseas Catholics who want to join the activities of the local church, particularly in the celebration of Mass or liturgy. For example, there are KKI Catholics who are involved in the celebration of local Church Masses such as Acolytes/alter boys, Lectors/readers of the sacred readings or as members of the choir. There are also other categorical groups involved in pastoral care for the sick or social events for Christmas and Easter. In addition, there are also people involved in KKI for a local parish, as one of the aims of the KKI Chaplaincy is expected to ‘being rooted in the local church too’.

Challenges

Keeping faith across land there is always a challenge. Besides the usual challenges of secularism, globalisation, technology and communication, another important issue we feel is with young families and the faith of their children who were born in Australia. Especially in Australia, where religion is not taught formally in school. The question causes anxiety for KKI Catholics as who will teach foundation/basis of religion to our children? They worry about a lifestyle and different outlook that secularism brings to the cultural roots of Australia. We have already started Sunday School that teaches a number of Basic Doctrines of the Catholic Faith as well as several Basic Catholic Values expressed through art, which correspond to the model that is usually taught in schools.

In terms of quantity, KKI Catholics are in the top four for the migrant groups in the Catholic Archdiocese of Melbourne. The number is predicted to get bigger every year. We are very proud of the quantity, but the challenge is they all live far away, scattered across the 8 different locations of Melbourne. Although they are all Indonesian Catholics, they also come from different regions and major cities in Indonesia. Sometimes, the administrators and chaplains cannot meet the needs of the different groups.

Hope

In the last 15 years, the Catholic Bishops Conference of Australia (Konferensi Wali Gereja Katolik Australia) have acknowledged, their respect and even admiration of the Ethnic Migrant presence of the Catholic church in this country. Almost every Metropolitan Archdiocese in major cities such as Melbourne have been officially formed Chaplaincies for the Ethnic Migrant of the Catholic Church, including KKI. With the spiritual support of the Archdiocese of Melbourne all the pastoral and sacremental activities of the KKI have gone well. We continue to search for a model of pastoral care that is in accordance with the needs of the people.

In the course of migration wandering toward the promise land of Canaan, the Israelites were given a guide in the form of the Law of Moses. In His Law, the prophet commanded to Israel as the Great Commandments, a guide and a handle to the nation of Israel and the tribe of nomads who were wandering: “Love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind. And your neighbour as yourself “. In the New Testament, Jesus underlined the words of the prophet Moses, saying: “on these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets (Matthew 22: 36-40).

Keeping faith across land especially “love God and your neighbor as yourself”, is not always easy. Though a Glimmer of hope will emerge if KKI Catholics follow the principles of the Catholic doctrine. Characteristics of unity, kinship and brotherhood will glue migrants together, which in turn could make the faith of KKI Catholics across the lands remain intact.

Hopefully, KKI can become a home for the Catholic community in Melbourne, Victoria.
